ALDI opening in Houston & Pearland, TX. What’s ALDI like?

April 7th, 2013

Recently, we relocated from NC and were thrilled to see ALDI coming to Texas. Some Facebook chatter made me realize that Texans might not be familiar with ALDI , why it’s worth a trip and what it offers. So, this post was born.

The Digital Mom and myself have to admit when we first visited an ALDI we walked in, walked around and walked out. Years later we returned when we tightened our fiscal belts.

So, What’s ALDI Like?

ALDI Texas – What you’ll see outside,.

It starts outside. In a word.. bring a quarter and some shopping bags. Why? So, you can get a shopping cart (with the quarter). At ALDI there are no baggers and no lot attendants. So, the cashier puts your groceries back in the cart… then, you can bag them at the counters near the exit. Less staff, Lower prices.

What You Will See Inside ALDI in Houston and Pearland

Items like flour, sugar, cereal and canned goods are on pallets. Everything has a sign above.

Smaller items are on shelves.

What Can I Buy at ALDI in Texas?

At ALDI you will find the most frequently purchased items with ALDI’s private label brand along with Special Buys on Brand Name products. In a typical trip to ALDI stores in NC we purchased 90% of our groceries at ALDI and picked up the rest at another market. Your mileage may vary.. you may be able to buy 100% or less than we did. A trip for our family of 3 was rarely above $200.

Some Tips for Shopping ALDI in Texas

Here are our shopping tips for making the most of ALDI shopping.

  1. Bring shopping bags. The reusable ones are best. We use one from IKEA (a blue and yellow one) and purchased several from ALDI.. they were larger than the ones sold at other supermarkets.
  2. Sauces, canned items, dairy, meat and frozen items were of good quality.
  3. From what I could figure out the breakfast cereal is/was manufactured by Malt O Meal and offers a VERY good value for the money. The Digital Daughter wants you to know that it’s “ripped off brands that taste exactly the same.”
  4. I tend to watch the exp. dates… and this comes in handy at ALDI as some categories of food (dairy and bread) may not sell as quickly as others.
  5. ALDI changes suppliers sometimes monthly and this may mean that the frozen pizza you purchased last week isn’t quite the same next month or, it may be in a slightly different package.
  6. The fresh  produce is a mixed bag…  (no pun intended) some items like bell peppers were great. While fresh berries tended to perish quicker.
  7. The Wine is a great value.

  9. The Digital Mom says “If you can get past the non brand name orientation you will discover some serious savings.”

Turning the Page: North Carolina in the Rear View

January 13th, 2013

When my girlfriend (now Digital Mom) and I relocated to North Carolina from Texas 16 years ago we’d never imagined that we would move back to Texas. But, recently that is exactly what has happened. And as we put a final wrap on things in North Carolina

I’ve had a little time to reflect on all the life events that occurred in North Carolina for me.

  • Married Digital Mom
  • 9/11
  • Bought, remodeled or otherwise upgraded and sold four properties some of which is documented here and here.
  • Had our Digital household increase with the addition of cat, child and dog.
  • Marked the passing of two grandparents
  • Met several friends, co-workers, and clients.

Now that the house is under contract and nearly closed and sold it’s time to move forward but, not forget the great times and people we’ve met and the wild and crazy rollercoaster ride we’ve had.

How to Organize a Desk, Router & Cable Modem

December 16th, 2012

How I organized a desk, cable modem, wireless router

We moved into some temporary and smaller housing and when it was time for me to play I.T. it was time for some creative thinking. Luckily this temporary home has a desk with a cable outlet underneath with a plug pretty close by. So, what did I do to organize the cable modem, wireless router and not wind up with a rat’s nest of a desk?

  • First, I jumped through a few hoops to get Comcast XFINITY Internet.
  • Second I reviewed the approved cable modems.
  • Third, was to buy a suitable cable modem. I decided on the Motorola SB6121 SURFboard DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem I liked the modem’s stats and what I read in the reviews seemed to support the purchase.
  • Fourth, was the Wireless router. There was nothing wrong with the Monoprice Wireless N router that I had so, I put it back into service as well. Given, that the other cable outlets in our temporary digs were all occupied and I couldn’t see putting this gear in the kitchen… I decided on under the desk. You may ask…How did you do that? Here’s what I did.

Supplies

  1. Two packs of Command Products – Hanging Removable Interlocking Fasteners
  2. One pack of Velcro Reusable Self-Gripping Cable Ties
  3. One 6-Outlet Surge Protector

Stick the Command Products – Hanging Removable Interlocking Fasteners on the back of the cable modem and wireless router. I tried hanging the surge protector but, it was a little to hefty for the interlocking fasteners. The good thing about using the fasteners is there is no wall damage and nothing sticky left behind on the network gear when it’s time to move.

After I arranged everything on the wall like I wanted it I tamed the cable lengths with the Velcro Reusable Self-Gripping Cable Ties.

Then, I plugged everything up and did the router/modem setup. Try it then, sit back and enjoy a little less clutter on your desk.

Thanks, Zig

Zig Ziglar

Zig you’ll be missed. Thanks for sharing candid stories about weight loss, running, family and friendship. Seeing you speak live in Orlando, FL was a great treat. We spoke for a few minutes and someone I didn’t even know took a picture of us and managed to mail it to me a week later. I still have that picture and program. Your “Goals” cassettes got and kept me motivated during early morning drives to 7 am community college first period classes. The best tools I learned were on those tapes. How to set a goal: write down a plan of action, put a deadline to it were keys to unlocking your wisdom. You truly can accomplish anything if you are willing to help enough other people get what they want.
Your passing has reminded me to revisit your thought leadership and share it with the next generation. I can’t imagine where I’d be if I didn’t have access to your advice. Thanks, Zig.
