Compare NC Candidates for Governor

In this document from SEANC it's pretty clear who will support the underpaid State employees. If you believe it means higher taxes you could be right but, if Ballantine cuts state spending as stated there might be enough to pay State employees without raising taxes.

If taxes are raised is it worth giving DMV workers a bit more to encourage a better customer service attitude?

Too bad...no raise for Grier

Let's just hope his contract doesn't get renewed in '07!

MSFT "paperless" Home

Recently installed the XP service pack and tucked into my "Links" list was a link for Windows Marketplace (sneaky...Redmond...very sneaky).

Clicking around I found this article . And got a good chuckle in the process.

A paperless home? Transfer my address book to Outlook? (until the computer crashes.)
Store my recipes in a database? How will I use them in the kitchen without printing them? I guess I could network the house and put a terminal in the kitchen... Nah, paper is cheaper and a recipebook can withstand the enivitable drops, drips and other causualties that come with cooking.

Thanks but, no thanks MSFT.

Ballantine for Governor Blog Button

I created a button for you to use to show support for Patrick Ballantine. The candidate to vote for in North Carolina's Governor's race.

To use it, do me a favor and download it by right clicking and save as... (don't hotlink) then, upload it to your blog or webpage.

Why I still don't trust Alexa

So I was reading an e-mail newsletter and low and behold it suggested I visit and download the new Alexa browser toolbar with a pop-up blocker...wow a pop-up blocker... a little late to this party, no?

Well, I remembered the small huff that Alexa got into and noticed that the most troubling of all is their Privacy Policy which still creeps me out. Right at the top (in unreadable ALL CAPS...ugh)

...COLLECTS AND STORES INFORMATION ABOUT THE WEB PAGES YOU VIEW, THE DATA YOU ENTER IN ONLINE FORMS AND SEARCH FIELDS, AND, WITH VERSIONS 5.0 AND HIGHER, THE PRODUCTS YOU PURCHASE ONLINE WHILE USING THE TOOLBAR SERVICE. ALTHOUGH ALEXA DOES NOT ATTEMPT TO ANALYZE WEB USAGE DATA TO DETERMINE THE IDENTITY OF ANY ALEXA USER, SOME INFORMATION COLLECTED BY THE TOOLBAR SERVICE IS PERSONALLY IDENTIFIABLE.

So, Alexa/Amazon learns everything about my online experience in exchange for a pop-up blocker? Don't have to think to long on that one. Especially since Amazon can't even get my preferences correct

Further down the page the atrocities continue:

...WHEN YOU PERFORM SEARCHES USING THE SEARCH FUNCTION AVAILABLE ON ALEXA'S TOOLBAR SERVICE SOFTWARE VERSION 6.5 AND HIGHER OR ON THE ALEXA WEBSITE, YOU OFTEN WILL BE TAKEN TO A WEBSITE DETAIL PAGE AT AMAZON.COM. IF YOU HAVE AN ACCOUNT ON AMAZON.COM AND AN AMAZON.COM COOKIE ENABLED, YOUR SEARCH RESULTS WILL BE TRANSMITTED TO AND LOGGED BY AMAZON.COM AND MAY BE CORRELATED BY AMAZON.COM WITH ANY PERSONALLY IDENTIFIABLE INFORMATION YOU MAY HAVE PREVIOUSLY PROVIDED TO AMAZON.COM.

So, count me out of that download..there's more than enough spyware, spoof websites and e-mails to dodge.

Bush is Ahead...in the e-mail newsletter race as well.

In this article from NielsenBush vs. Kerry: Email Newsletters Rated (Jakob Nielsen's Alertbox). Where we learn that Bush is ahead (50% vs. 18%) where it really matters... in the content for the metric "Positive campaiging".
Seems that Bush and his staff put a higher value on promoting "party's own candidate and proposals". Looks like Kerry and staff are more interested in raising campaign funds: "Kerry in particular risked both donor fatigue and unsubscribes by sending out two fundraising emails in a single day (August 31)."

Security Guards Need a National Voice

If you’ve been to an office building or production plant a security officer has most likely greeted you. To prevent any confusion first let’s define the word security guard. For the purposes of this blog entry, a security guard is an individual who has been granted a license (in my state) by the North Carolina Private Protective Services Board

" (6) Security guard and patrol profession means any person, firm, association,or corporation that provides a security guard on a contractual basis for another person, firm, association, or corporation for a fee or other valuable consideration and performing one or more of the following functions" full N.C. statute.

Here’s some insight into a "typical work week" as a security officer. Work a straight 8 or 12-hour shift without a relief or break of any kind. You will most likley be scheduled to work up to 8 days in a row. Actual working conditions will vary from hot to cold but you will always be required to wear a polyester shirt and pants. Sounds like fun? Not really.

It’s true that this is a dog eat dog industry where turnover is 100% or more and margins run thin. (Few industries complain of fat margins.) Security companies are challenged to make a profit while serving their clients. Above the din of “client management” there is little room for the voice and concerns of the officer.

Some will argue that “you can get another job”. This might be true for some guards but not all of them have the same education or experience that would permit them employment latitude.

From what I’ve seen first hand, security guards might benefit from a union or other labor organization. A voice for the concerns of the guards who are left holding the proverbial bag in the middle of this lop-sided "customer service" equation. Perhaps a union can help solve the low wage and poor working conditions that seem to plague this industry.

Global warming

Must be due to a warming of the sun... (duh! I thought it was due to Bush's economic policies :-) This is one you might not have seen in the TV media as it's not a popular observation that supports what all those tree embracers are yelling about.
The The Washington Times has an article on it. But, I heard it on the local FM talk radio station.

Web Design Standards anyone?

As a web designer/app developer nothing drives me nuttier than when a site breaks with convention as Nielsen states in his latest Alertbox The Need for Web Design Standards

If you put "design" ahead of most of these (as I don't agree entirely with Nielsen) conventions and you are responsible for a public information site of any ilk be prepared for the backlash in low site visits and low buy-side conversions.

The U.S.P.S Should be Replaced

We are at a new address with the mailbox installed last week and the post office can not tell me if they have received mail to deliver to me. HUH?
Let's just replace this "service". I'll pay UPS or FedEx $2.00 per flat mail piece.
